Syncretism is the way different beliefs or ideas merge together.

It often happens with religious traditions. One religion might take parts of another religion and add them to its own. This can create a brand new, unified system of belief. This is different from eclecticism, where people just pick parts from different places. In syncretism, those parts blend into one cohesive whole. It is a way to show that different faiths might share a common unity.

This blending can happen for many different reasons. It often occurs when many different religious groups live close to each other. Sometimes, one group conquers another group and brings new ideas. The new rulers might not erase the old traditions completely. Instead, the old and new ways begin to mix. This can help different cultures find a way to live together. It can also lead to a compromise between different values and customs.

History shows us many examples of this process. In the 16th century, the Mughal emperor Akbar tried something unique. He proposed a new faith called Din-i Ilahi, or "Divine Faith."

This system drew ideas from Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Jainism, and Zoroastrianism. Akbar used a policy called sulh-i-kul, which means "universal peace." It did not have holy books or a large group of priests. It had fewer than 20 disciples chosen by Akbar himself. This was part of his way to rule his large empire.

Other rulers used syncretism to help keep their kingdoms strong. During the Hellenistic period, rulers identified local gods with Greek gods. This helped people feel more connected to the government. The Roman Empire did this too by mixing Roman and Greek gods.

In Africa, many people combine traditional beliefs with Islam or Christianity. They do not feel they are losing their old ways. Instead, they are gaining something new from both traditions. This shows how ideas can travel and change over time.

Not everyone agrees that mixing beliefs is a good thing. Some people believe that adding new ideas can corrupt a religion. They want to keep their faith pure and unchanged. These followers might see syncretism as a betrayal of the truth. However, some thinkers argue that all religions are always changing. They believe religions are naturally syncretic because they always use elements from different cultures.
