A goddess is a female deity or a divine being. In many different faiths, a sacred female figure holds a central place in prayer and worship.

Some people believe a goddess is the ultimate source of all reality. For example, followers of Shaktism believe the Supreme Goddess is the ultimate power. In Vajrayana Buddhism, the ultimate reality is often seen as two principles in union. One principle is perfect wisdom, which is shown as female. This shows how different parts of the universe work together.

The Germanic peoples held special celebrations for their goddesses. In India, there are many goddesses like Agneya, the goddess of fire. Prithvi is a name for the goddess of the Earth. In the ancient Hittite Empire, Arinniti was the goddess of the sun. These names and stories help people understand their world and their history.

The word goddess comes from combining the word god with a special ending. This word first appeared in Middle English around the year 1350.

Many other languages, like Greek and Egyptian, do something similar. They add a feminine ending to the word for a god. This helps people know they are talking about a female being. Today, people still study these ancient beliefs to learn about human culture. Understanding goddesses helps us see how people have wondered about the world for thousands of years.
