She played many different roles in the lives of the people. As a goddess of the sky, she was a mother to the sun god, Ra.

This role made her a symbolic mother to the pharaohs on Earth. She was also seen as the wife of the sun god. Hathor helped souls move safely into the afterlife. She was a goddess who crossed the boundaries between different worlds.

This goddess had two very different sides to her nature. One side was gentle and full of joy. This side represented beauty, music, dance, and love.

The other side was much more fierce and strong. As the "Eye of Ra," she acted as a protector for the sun god. In this form, she could be a lioness or a cobra.

She used this power to defend Ra from his many enemies. These two sides showed the different parts of femininity to the Egyptians.

History shows that Hathor became very important during the Old Kingdom.

Some cattle goddesses appeared even earlier in the fourth millennium BC. However, Hathor rose to great fame with the support of early rulers. She even took over the place of a crocodile god at Dendera.

She eventually merged with other local goddesses like Bat. This helped her become one of the most widely worshipped figures in Egypt.

Many specific details tell us how people honored her. More temples were built for Hathor than for any other goddess.

Women often made private prayers to her to help them have children. Some people even traveled from foreign lands to worship her.

Her connection to the sun and sky is very clear. The Egyptians saw the sky as a body of water.

Hathor was often shown as a cow in this sky. This was because cows symbolize motherhood and nourishment. She was sometimes called the "Golden One" because of the sun's light. Even as other goddesses like Isis became more popular, Hathor remained important. She was worshipped until the ancient Egyptian religion ended in the early centuries AD.
