Asherah was a major goddess in ancient Semitic religions.

She was a very important figure in many different cultures. Her influence reached across lands like Egypt and Arabia. She was also known in Israel and Judah.

People in these areas held many different beliefs about her. She was a central part of their spiritual lives.

Many people saw her as a mother goddess. She was often linked to fertility and the creation of life. Some of her many titles included "lady" or "holy." In some traditions, she was the wife of the god El.

Because of this role, she was sometimes called the "progenitress of the gods." This meant she was seen as the mother of all divine beings.

People used many symbols to show who she was. A very common symbol for her was a tree. They often used the date palm to represent her. Some people used wooden poles called asherah poles.

These poles were mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Scholars still debate if these poles represented the goddess herself or just sacred symbols.

Asherah was also linked to powerful animals. The lioness was a symbol used for her in many places. This made her seem strong and grand to her followers. One arrowhead from the 11th century BCE even mentions a "Servant of the Lion Lady."

Her image may have helped shape the ideas behind other famous goddesses. Her name and her specific roles changed as different groups of people lived in different times.

In ancient Palestine, some inscriptions suggest she may have been linked to Yahweh. These were found at places like Kuntillet Ajrud and Khirbet el-Qom.

Some scholars think these writings describe her as a goddess. Other scholars argue they might just be talking about sacred objects. Over time, new religious reforms changed how people practiced their faith. Many older references to her were later understood as groves or sacred trees.
