Ancient Semitic religion includes the many beliefs of people from the ancient Near East and Northeast Africa. These people spoke Semitic languages, which is how we group them. This is different from groups like the Egyptians or Greeks. These ancient people were often polytheistic. This means they believed in many different gods at once.

Many of these beliefs were organized into regional groups. In the Levant, the Canaanite religions were very important. These included the traditions of the Phoenicians and the Moabites. In Mesopotamia, the religions were influenced by the Sumerians. There were also traditions in Arabia and places like Carthage. Each group had its own special gods and ways of worship.

In the city of Ugarit, scholars found many clay tablets. These tablets help us understand the Canaanite gods. They tell us about a creator god named El. El was seen as the father of many other deities. People also worshipped a storm god named Haddu. Some families even had their own gods inside their homes.

In Babylon and Assyria, gods were linked to the sky. People saw the sun and moon as divine beings. They also saw five planets as part of this group. Sin was the name for the moon god. Shamash was the name for the sun god. Other gods included Marduk and Ishtar. These gods were often tied to specific cities or nature.

Over many centuries, these beliefs began to change. Some groups moved from many gods to only one god. This is called monotheism. Many scholars think old stories influenced new ones. For example, the Genesis flood story might relate to the Epic of Gilgamesh. The religion of Israel grew from these ancient roots. It shows how ideas can grow and transform over time.
