Her name means "the green one" in the ancient language. She was first known as a local goddess from the city of Buto. This city was located in the Nile Delta in Lower Egypt. Over a long time, she became a patron goddess for a much larger area. Many people believe she was a powerful protector for many different things. She was thought to guard kings and also women during childbirth.

People often used a symbol of her eye to stay safe.

This eye symbol is a very famous part of her story. The eye is often shown in bright blue and green colors. These colors match her name, which means "the green one." People wore small charms made of these colors in their daily lives. They believed these charms could bring protection and fertility to them. The symbol is also linked to the Eye of Ra and the Eye of Horus. There is some debate about which specific eye belongs to her. One difference is simply which side of the face the eye is on.

Ancient stories tell us many different things about Wadjet's life. In one myth, she was the daughter of the sun god, Ra. She acted as his seeing eye to help him find others. Ra was very proud of her for being so successful. In another story, she helped protect the young god Horus. She and the goddess Isis hid him in the Nile Delta swamps. She also acted as a nurse to many different kings.

This helped them stay strong in their royal roles.

Wadjet had many different ways that she might appear to people. She was most often shown as an Egyptian cobra snake. This snake could strike at anyone trying to hurt a king. Sometimes she was shown as a woman with a snake's head.

Some art even shows her as a lioness. This might be because she was seen as a very powerful being. She could also appear as a vulture or a winged cobra. Her wings were often colored in red, gold, blue, and green.

Her role changed as the history of Egypt changed too. She worked closely with her sister, Nekhbet, who was a vulture. Together, they were called the "Two Ladies" by the people. They represented the unity of all of Egypt.

You can see them together on the crowns of rulers. This showed that the king ruled both Upper and Lower Egypt. Their images helped show that the whole country was joined as one. This idea of protection and unity was very important to the ancient Egyptians.
