He was closely linked to the Nile crocodile. Most people saw him as a crocodile or a man with a crocodile head. He represented many different things to the Egyptian people. He was linked to the power of the pharaohs. He also represented fertility and strength in battle. People also asked him for protection from the dangers of the Nile river.

Many different ideas about Sobek changed over time. In the Middle Kingdom, he joined with the god Horus. This connection made him part of a divine family with Isis and Osiris. Later, he was joined with the sun god, Ra. This created a new form called Sobek-Ra.

This new form helped show his connection to the sun. Some people believe his name might mean he unites things together.

His history in Egypt lasted for a very long time. He was known during the Old Kingdom around 2686 to 2181 BCE. We see his name in old Pyramid Texts from that era. He became even more famous during the Middle Kingdom. The pharaoh Amenemhat III of the Twelfth Dynasty was a big supporter.

This king built many things to honor the god. Sobek remained important even during the Roman period of Egypt.

Many special places were built to worship him. The Faiyum region was a huge center for his followers. One major city was called Crocodilopolis, or Shedet in Egyptian.

Another very large center was at Kom Ombo. This temple was called the Per-Sobek, which means the house of Sobek. Priests in these temples had very special jobs. They served the crocodile gods and their many forms.

People showed their respect for Sobek in unique ways. They often kept crocodiles as living symbols of the god. When these crocodiles died, people made mummies of them. They even offered mummified crocodile eggs to him. This helped show how the sun moves in a cycle. Some people also believed Sobek helped create the world. He was said to have risen from the waters of Lake Moeris. This shows how much people wondered about his power.
