It serves as the capital for the Faiyum Governorate. A canal named Bahr Yussef runs right through the city. Many houses are built along the banks of this water. You might see four waterwheels in the city center. These wheels are used as the symbol for the whole area.

This place has a very long and busy history. People lived in this area as far back as the fifth millennium BC. In the time of the Old Kingdom, the settlement was called Shedet. This city was a major center for the god Sobek. Sobek was a crocodile god. Because of this, the Greeks called the city "Crocodile City."

They even worshipped a sacred crocodile named Petsuchos. This animal lived in a special temple pond. Priests fed the crocodile with food brought by visitors.

Many different groups of people have ruled Faiyum over the years. Under the Ptolemaic Kingdom, the city was named Arsinoë. This name honored a queen named Arsinoe II. Later, the city became part of the Roman Empire. During Roman times, people created unique art called Faiyum mummy portraits. These were faces painted on wood using a wax technique called encaustic.

These portraits show the mix of Egyptian and Greek cultures. They are famous examples of how people lived back then.

History also comes alive through old writings found in the sand. In the 1914s, workers found many papyrus documents near the city. These are known as the Zenon Papyri.

They were written by a man named Zeno in the 3rd century BC. These papers tell us about the economy and daily life in the town of Philadelphia. They show us how people used Greek and Demotic writing. These records help historians understand the ancient world much better.

Today, Faiyum is a lively place with many things to see. The city has large bazaars and beautiful mosques. One famous building is the Qaitbay Mosque, which sits on a bridge. The climate here is a hot desert type. There are many amazing sites nearby to explore. You can visit the Lahun Pyramids or the Wadi Al-Hitan. The Valley of Whales is a special UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a place where you can find very old fossils.
