Water is what makes this desert place grow. About 200 natural springs provide water for the land. People also use irrigation and flowing artesian wells. This water makes the ground very fertile. Because of this, thousands of olive trees and date palms grow there.

There are also two large salt lakes. These lakes are filled by water from the farms. The ground is made of layers of limestone, clay, and marl.

Siwa has been a home for people for a very long time. People have lived there since at least the 10th millennium BCE. In ancient times, it was known as the Oasis of Amun-Ra. It was a famous home for an oracle.

The famous leader Alexander the Great once traveled there to visit the oracle.

Many different groups have visited or ruled Siwa. In the 12th century, Muslim geographers said Berbers lived there. The English traveler William George Browne visited the temple in 1792. Later, Egypt took control of the area in 1820. During the World Wars, different armies stayed in the oasis. The British Army and the German Afrika Korps both were there.

Even a small Egyptian government was set up there in 1942.

The local Siwi Berber people have a very unique culture. For a long time, they were isolated from the rest of the world. They used camel tracks to trade olives and dates.
