The weather in Kharga is very hot and dry. This is called a hot desert climate. Most of the year, the summers are extreme. It almost never rains here. The winters are warm, but the nights can be cool. Around the modern town, many plants grow in the sand. You can see thorny date palms and acacia trees. There are also buffalo thorn and jujube plants. Many types of wildlife live in this green area.

For a long time, this oasis was a famous meeting place. A trade route called Darb El Arba'in passed through here. This name means "the forty-day road."

The route ran from Middle Egypt to the Sudan. People used it to move gold, ivory, and spices. They also moved wheat, animals, and plants. The desert path was often safer than the Nile route. It was also less expensive for the traders.

History is hidden all over the oasis. The Romans built a chain of forts to protect the trade route. These forts were made of mud bricks. Some even had small stone temples inside.

You can also find the Temple of Hibis nearby. It was built around 500 BC. There is an old Christian cemetery at El Bagawat too. It is one of the best-preserved in the world. Archaeologists even found a beautiful necklace at a site called Dush.

Today, Kharga is a modern and busy place. It is the capital of the New Valley Governorate. About 87,482 people live in the oasis. The main town of Kharga has many modern facilities. Most of the old buildings are gone now. People can travel to the oasis by bus. Many different families live here from all over. Some families come from places like Tunisia, Libya, or Mecca. This makes the oasis a true crossroads of the desert.
