Dakhla Oasis

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dakhla Oasis is a special place in Egypt's Western Desert. It sits within the New Valley Governorate. This oasis is located 350 km from the Nile River. It lies between two other oases named Farafra and Kharga. The land is very large and stretches 80 km from east to west. It is also 25 km from north to south. This area has a hot desert climate.

The oasis works as a group of many small communities. These towns sit along a string of smaller sub-oases. Some of the main settlements are Mut and El-Masara. Another important town is called Al-Qasr. This town was built in the 12th century by Ayyubid kings. They built it on the ruins of an old Roman fort. Many buildings there are made of mud brick. Some of these buildings are even four stories tall.

History began in this place a very long time ago. During the Pleistocene period, nomadic tribes lived here. At that time, the Sahara was wetter with lakes and marshes. About 6,000 years ago, the climate became very dry. People could still find water from the Nubian Aquifer deep underground. In the 3rd millennium BC, the Sheikh Muftah culture lived here. Later, during the Pharaonic period, people wrote on clay tablets.

Many amazing things have been found by researchers. At Ayn Asil, people found about 500 clay tablets. These tablets had lists, accounts, and fifty letters on them. In 2017, workers found five mud-brick tombs at Bir esh-Shaghala. These tombs were nearly 2,000 years old. Inside, they found gold masks and large jars. One tomb even had a roof shaped like a pyramid.

Scientists still study the oasis today to learn more. The Dakhleh Oasis Project began in 1978. This project looks at how the environment and people change together. They also study petroglyphs, which are carvings made in rocks. There are more than 1,300 panels of this rock art. The carvings show animals, people, and even hieroglyphs. These images tell stories from prehistory to the Islamic period.
