Dakahlia Governorate

geography Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Dakahlia is a busy region in the northeast part of Egypt. It sits inside the Nile Delta, a large area of flat land. To the north, it touches Kafr El-Sheikh. To the east, it meets Damietta and Sharqiya. To the south is Qalyubia, and to the west is Gharbia. One branch of the Nile River, called the Damietta branch, flows through this land. This water makes the soil very fertile for farming. The region also looks out over Lake Manzala to the east. This is one of the biggest natural lakes in Egypt.

Archaeologists have found many secrets in the soil here. In February 2020, they found 83 old tombs. These date back to 4,000 B.C. during the Naqada III period. Inside, they found pottery, sea shells, and even makeup tools. In April 2021, they found 110 more tombs at a site called Koum el-Khulgan. Some of these were oval and some were rectangular. They found the remains of adults and even a baby in a jar. They also found gold masks and beautiful jewels.

This land has a very long history. In ancient times, it was part of the Pharaonic era. One important area was called Tell el-Muqaddam. It was the capital of a place called Leontopolis. Another site is the ancient city of Mendes. This city was once the capital of Egypt. King Ahmose III built a great temple there. Today, only a huge stone box called a sarcophagus remains. It is the largest stone sarcophagus in all of Egypt.

Many famous battles and changes happened here. In 1250 AD, the Battle of Mansoura took place. A king from France named Louis IX led a large group of fighters. They wanted to take control of Egypt. However, local soldiers and people fought them in the narrow streets. This battle was a big turning point in history. Much later, in 1798, people in Dakahlia resisted Napoleon Bonaparte. In the village of Dandit, residents even flooded the land to stop the French.

Today, Dakahlia is an important place for living and working. Mansoura is the capital and the center for culture. Other big cities include Mit Ghamr, Talkha, and Sherbin. The weather is usually warm, but it can get cold in the winter. Summers are often hot and humid. The land is filled with many farms and busy towns. Because the Nile brings so much water, the area is very productive. It remains a key part of Egypt's agriculture and industry.
