Al-Ahsa Oasis

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Al-Ahsa Oasis is a very special place in eastern Saudi Arabia.

It sits inland from the coast of the Persian Gulf. This oasis is part of the Eastern Province of the country. Most of the land here is in the Empty Quarter, which is a huge sand desert. The oasis is actually the largest one in the whole world. It includes four main cities and 22 different villages. Two of the biggest cities are Al-Mubarraz and Al-Hofuf.

Life in the desert depends on water. This oasis works because of a huge underground layer of water called an aquifer. Rain soaks through the sand and stays trapped under a hard layer of earth. This keeps the water from drying up in the heat. More than 280 natural springs bring this water to the surface. Because of these springs, people can farm all year long. There are over 2.5 million palm trees in the area. These trees produce more than 100,000 tons of dates every single year.

People have lived in Al-Ahsa since prehistoric times. They stayed there because there was plenty of water in a dry land. In the past, the area had many different rulers. It was part of the Rashidun Caliphate and the Umayyad and Abbasid empires. By the year 1000, Al-Ahsa was the ninth largest city in the world. It had about 100,000 people living there back then. Later, the Ottoman Empire ruled the region for a time. Eventually, ibn Saud brought the area into the modern country of Saudi Arabia in 1913.

There are many interesting things to see and do in the oasis. You can visit the Jawatha Mosque to see its history.

Some people visit the beautiful Jabal Al-Qarah. The oasis is also famous for its skilled tailors. They are known for making a traditional cloak called a bisht. People also visit the busy bazaars to find spices and clothing. In 2018, it became a World Heritage site because it is so important.

Al-Ahsa is also a very important place for energy. In 1938, people found petroleum deposits near Dammam. This changed the region very quickly. Today, the oasis is home to the Ghawar Field. This is the largest conventional oil field in the entire world. The weather here is a hot desert climate. The summers are very long and extremely hot. The winters are short and very mild. Even though it rarely rains, the oasis stays green and full of life.
