It sits about 200 km west of the Nile valley. The oasis is a big depression in the sand. It is the largest of the five oases in this part of the desert.

The weather is very hot and dry. It rarely rains here. Many plants grow in the oasis. You can see thorny date palms and acacia trees. Many kinds of wildlife live in the area too.

Long ago, people used a trade route called Darb El Arba'in. This name means "the forty-day road." It helped people move gold, ivory, and spices through the desert. The Romans even built mud brick forts to keep the route safe.

There are many old things to find. You can see the Temple of Hibis. There is also an old Christian cemetery at El Bagawat.

Some people even found a necklace from a site called Dush.
