geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Faiyum is a place in the middle of Egypt. Its capital is the city of Faiyum. This city sits southwest of Cairo. The name Faiyum means "the lake."

This name comes from old words for the nearby Lake Moeris.

The land in Faiyum has many different parts. There is a large, green oasis. This oasis has farms and cities. It also has Lake Moeris. South of the oasis, there is a smaller area with the town of El Gharaq el Sulţāni. This town gets water from the Nile River. West of that is a dry area called Wadi El Rayan. It is a barren land. Most of the area is desert or dry mountains.
