It sits deep in the heart of the Sahara Desert. This part of the desert is called the Ténéré. It is a very dry place that covers parts of Niger and western Chad. Huge cliffs called the Kaouar escarpment protect the town. These cliffs stand between the town and the desert dunes. Bilma is the largest town along these cliffs. It is a vital place for people living in this dry land.

The weather in Bilma is very extreme. It has a hot desert climate. The sun shines there for about 4,000 hours every year. It is extremely dry with very little rain. During the summer, it is extremely hot for a long time. Temperatures can go above 40 °C from April to September. The hottest day was on June 23, 2010. Even the winter can be surprising. The town is known for its green gardens and date cultivation. People also use evaporation ponds to make salt and natron. This salt is sold to help livestock across west Africa. Many people live here, including the Kanuri, Toubou, Tuareg, and Hausa. The 2012 census counted 4,016 people living in the town. The Hausa people are a reminder of old trade paths.

Bilma has a very long and busy history. A poet named Abu Ishaq Ibrahim al-Kanemi was born there in the 12th century. For a long time, it was a stop for the Azalai. This was a desert caravan route from Agadez. Later, the French used the town as a military post at Fort Dromard. In the 1980s, the government built a prison there. It was used to hold political leaders like Sanoussi Tambari Djakou. In 1989, a plane called UTA Flight 772 crashed nearby.

Today, Bilma is a center for its local department. It is an important place for the economy of the region. While salt production is still huge, things are changing. Tourism is now growing in importance for the area. Many visitors come from Agadez or the Aïr Mountains to the west. They come to see the unique landscape of the oasis. It remains a key destination in the vast Sahara Desert.
