It is the third largest city in the whole nation. You can find it sitting east of the capital city, Niamey. It is also located north of the city of Kano in Nigeria. The city has many different parts that make it unique. In the north, there is an old area called Zengou. This area is known for its special traditional buildings.

Moving through the city feels like traveling through time. The center of Zinder has three main sections. The south part is called Birni, which is an old Hausa town. This area holds the Sultan's Palace and a museum.

Between the old areas lies Sabon Gari, the new town. This is the commercial center where the Grand Marché market sits. The city also grows out toward the north and west. Many people live in neighborhoods like Garin Mallam and Gawon Kollia.

Zinder has a very long and busy history. It began as a small village called Zengou. In 1736, new leaders arrived and built a fortified area. They made Zinder the capital of the Sultanate of Damagaram. The city became a huge hub for trade across the Sahara. Later, European explorers like Heinrich Barth visited the area in 1851. In 1899, the French military occupied the city. They even used a building called Fort Cazemajou as a capital.

Life in Zinder is shaped by its land and weather. The climate is very hot and dry most of the year. There is almost no rain from October until May. However, most of the rain falls during July and August. This makes the air feel very humid and heavy. The ground has many large granite rocks. These rocks can hold standing water during the rainy season. To help with water shortages, a company now pipes water to the city.
