There is also a dry season that is windy and partly cloudy. Temperatures stay hot or even sweltering all year long. The city is also located near a waterway called the Goulbi N'Maradi. This river comes from Nigeria and flows near the city area.

Maradi has a very long and interesting history. In the 19th century, it was a home for Hausa rulers. These leaders moved there to stay independent from the Sokoto Caliphate. The city was once surrounded by a mud wall with four doors. In 1945, the river flooded the ancient city. Because of this, the French changed the city layout to a grid system. This helped the city grow and become a center for business.
