It sits right on the Niger River. The city is located in the southwestern part of the country. It sits near the rapids that divide two river valleys. Bamako is a very large urban centre. In 2022, its population was about 4,227,569 people. It is the seventh-largest city in all of West Africa.

The land around the city is mostly flat. This flatness comes from being on a river floodplain. However, there is a large hill to the north. This hill is an escarpment left by an extinct volcano.

Many different things happen in the city today. People catch fish in the Niger River for food.
