It sits on the northern bank of the Ubangi River. This river forms the border between the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Across the water, you can find the town of Zongo. The river flows to the east of the downtown area.

Lush green hills stand behind the water. The river is a main path for ships. However, rapids near the city stop boats from traveling further north. In the rainy season, the river's water flow becomes three times higher than usual.

As a capital city, Bangui is a busy center for trade and government. It is home to the National Assembly and many foreign embassies. The city has many banks, hospitals, and large hotels.

Long before the modern city was built, people lived in this area. Archaeologists have found at least 26 ancient sites nearby. These sites belong to the Iron Age. They contain many tools made of metal and pieces of pottery.

One site is called Pendere-Sengue. It has thousands of ceramic shards and iron tools. Some of these items might be from the ninth century BC. This shows that the area has a very long history. The city was officially founded as a French outpost on June 26, 1889. Michel Dolisie and Alfred Uzac helped start the settlement.

The city's history has seen many changes and leaders. It was once part of a place called the French Congo. In 1960, the country became independent from France. During the 1970s, the city was sometimes called La Coquette, which means "the beautiful city."
