The name of the city comes from the Mbum language. In this language, 'Ngaou' means mountain and 'Ndare' means navel. Because of this, some people call the area the navel of Adamawa. The city is also located near Lake Tison.

Traveling to and from the city is very important for the region. A railway line from Yaoundé ends at the Ngaoundéré Central Station. This station is always full of life and activity.

There is also the Ngaoundéré Airport with a 1.6 km strip. It can hold large planes like the Boeing 737. A paved road also connects the city to Garoua, Maroua, and Chad. This road helps move many different goods. Cattle move from the Adamawa area toward the south. Bananas and fruits move from the south toward the north.

History shows that many different groups have lived here. The Mbum people lived in this area first. Later, the Fulani people arrived and founded the current city around 1835. A Fulani leader named Ardo Njobdi was the founder. In 1894, Ardo Muhammadu Abbo signed an agreement with a German explorer. The German army occupied the town in August 1901. During World War I, there was a skirmish here in 1915. After the war, France occupied the area until Cameroon became independent.

The city has grown very quickly over the years. In 2005, the census counted 152,700 people living there. By October 2023, the population rose to about 1,200,000 people. Many people move to the city from the Central African Republic. People also move there because of danger from Boko Haram in the north. The city attracts settlers from many nearby rural areas. Some come from Díi, some from Meiganga, and some from the west.
