The weather in Gao is hot and dry. This is called an arid climate. Most of the rain falls between June and September. August is usually the wettest month of the year. May is the hottest month, with temperatures reaching 43 °C. From October to March, a wind called the Harmattan blows from the Sahara. This wind comes from the north-east.

History tells us that Gao was once a powerful center. It was a major hub for the trans-Saharan trade. In the 9th century, writers described it as a regional power. By the end of the 10th century, the local ruler was a Muslim. Later, Gao became the capital of the Songhai Empire. This happened after the conquests of Sunni Ali.

The Niger River is vital for life in Gao. Most local farming depends on river water for irrigation. Every year, the river floods due to heavy rain far away. The flood reaches its peak in Gao during December. When the river floods, it can be 4 km wide. During the dry season, the water level drops. Small islands appear in the river when it is low.
