The geography of Gao is defined by its arid climate. This is a classification known as BWh. The weather is consistently hot and dry. Most rainfall occurs between June and September. August is typically the wettest month of the year. The average annual rainfall is only 220 mm. However, there are large variations in rainfall from year to year. May is the hottest month. The average daily high temperature reaches 43 °C. From October to March, the Harmattan wind blows from the Sahara. This is a north-easterly wind.

The Niger River is essential for life in this region. Most local agriculture relies on the river for irrigation. The river experiences an annual flood. This flood is caused by heavy rain in the headwaters. These headwaters are located in Guinea and the northern Ivory Coast. The water travels through the Inner Niger Delta to reach Gao. The flood peaks in Gao during December. This is much later than the peak in Koulikoro, which occurs in September. When the river is in flood, it can be 4 km wide. During the dry season, the water level drops significantly. Several islands appear in the river when the flow is low. In June and July, the flow is only 5% of the maximum.

History shows that Gao was once a massive commercial center. It was a key part of the trans-Saharan trade. Archaeological evidence shows Gao was rooted in regional economic networks. Excavations at Gao-Saney show the site was occupied by roughly 700 CE. It was a center for manufacturing and iron smelting. The site also participated in trade with areas as far as Mesopotamia. Fragments of North African enamel and Islamic glass were found there. This suggests Gao was a major hub for long-distance trade.

Various empires have controlled Gao throughout history. In the 9th century, Arabic writers called it a regional power. By the end of the 10th century, the local ruler was a Muslim. The Gao Empire preceded the Songhai Empire. Gao later became the capital of the Songhai Empire under Sunni Ali. He ruled from 1464 to 1492. The empire collapsed after a Moroccan invasion in 1591. The invaders made Timbuktu their capital instead. By 1854, the explorer Heinrich Barth found Gao had declined. It had become an impoverished village with 300 matting huts.

Modern Gao is a growing urban center. The urban commune is divided into nine quartiers. These districts are Gadeye, Farandjiré, Aljanabanbia, Djoulabougou, Saneye, Sosso Koïra, Boulgoundjé, Château, and Djidara. The population has grown quickly. In the 1998 census, the population was 52,201. By 2009, it had increased to 86,633. This represents an annual growth rate of 4.7%. The city is connected to Bamako by 1200 km of paved road. In 2006, the Wabaria bridge opened to replace the ferry service. This bridge was built by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation.

The city has also faced recent conflict. In 2012, rebels captured Gao from Malian government forces. These groups included the MNLA and Ansar Dine. The MNLA declared the region independent as the nation of Azawad. They named Gao as their capital. Islamist militias later took control after the Battle of Gao in June 2012. French military forces recaptured the city in early 2013. This was part of Opération Serval.
