Many different goods pass through its markets every day. This includes livestock, millet, and various oilseeds. The city is also a key site for gum arabic production.

As a transportation hub, El-Obeid connects many different routes. It is the terminus for a significant rail line. National roads also meet in the city to form a junction. Historically, it served as a destination for camel caravan routes. It is also the end of a long pilgrim route from Nigeria. Travel to the capital, Khartoum, is now easier due to asphalt roads. A tourist coach can complete the journey in about nine hours. Travel to Um Kadada in Darfur takes roughly three hours.

The history of El-Obeid involves many periods of change and conflict. Pashas from Ottoman Egypt founded the city in 1821. In September 1882, the Mahdists attacked the settlement. The city eventually capitulated and was destroyed in 1883. Following the fall of the Mahdist empire, the city was rebuilt. This reconstruction occurred in 1898 using a modern plan. More recently, the city experienced a siege during the Sudanese civil war. The Sudanese Army recaptured the city in early September 2023.

The climate in El-Obeid is classified as a hot semi-desert climate. This is known by the technical term BSh in the Köppen climate classification. It sits on the border of a hot desert climate, or BWh. Even though the area receives rain, the air stays dry. This is due to extremely high potential evapotranspiration. Evapotranspiration is the process where water moves from the land to the air. The hottest months are April, May, and June. The coolest months are December and January. The wet season runs from June to September. During this time, the humidity is relatively high.

Religion plays a significant role in the life of the city. The population is predominantly Muslim. However, there is also a small Christian presence in the area. El-Obeid is the seat of an Anglican Bishopric. It is also the seat of a Roman Catholic Diocese. This is one of only two such dioceses in Sudan. The other is located in Khartoum. The city is home to the Cathedral of Our Lady Queen of Africa. This Catholic Cathedral is one of the oldest and largest in Sudan. The current building was built between 1961 and 1964. It was designed in an Italian style.

Education and international cooperation are important in El-Obeid. The University of Kordofan was established in 1990. It is one of the largest universities in all of Sudan. Since 1989, the city has hosted a French Association known as the Alliance française. This serves as a cultural center for Sudanese and French people. It works closely with the university's French language department. Additionally, the United Nations Mission in Sudan established a Logistics Base there. This base helps support international efforts in the region.

The city also supports industrial and athletic activities. El-Obeid contains an airport and an oil refinery. These facilities help support the local economy and transport. In the world of sports, the city hosts professional football. The Sudanese Premier League team Al-Hilal SC plays in El-Obeid. As of 2015, the team was led by Boushra Adam. While the city is a center of growth, tensions can still exist. For example, tensions remain high at the grand market. The city continues to be a central part of Sudan's geography.
