Omdurman serves as a vital road hub for the region. The Nile River also provides important transportation routes. This makes the city a central point for movement throughout Sudan.

The climate in Omdurman is classified as hot and arid. This means the environment is very dry with little water. The city is one of the hottest major cities in the world. Temperatures often exceed 40 degrees Celsius during the mid-summer months. In fact, six months of the year have average monthly highs of at least 38 degrees Celsius. None of the monthly average high temperatures fall below 27 degrees Celsius. While days are very warm, the nights in January and February are relatively cool. During those months, average low temperatures stay just above 15 degrees Celsius.

Omdurman has a complex and often difficult history. The city grew rapidly after the building of the Mahdi's tomb. In 1898, a significant conflict known as the Battle of Omdurman occurred near the village of Kerreri.

A British army of 20,000 men fought against 52,000 Sudanese defenders. The British forces used modern equipment like Maxim guns and Martini-Henry rifles. The battle lasted only five hours. The Sudanese defenders suffered at least 10,000 deaths. The British side had fewer than 400 casualties, with 48 soldiers losing their lives. Following this, Great Britain and Egypt jointly governed Sudan until 1956.

The city has experienced more recent periods of conflict. In May 2008, the Justice and Equality Movement moved into the city. They engaged in heavy fighting with Sudanese government forces. Their goal was to topple the government of Omar Hassan al-Bashir. Later, during the Sudanese civil war, the city was occupied by the Rapid Support Forces. This occupation lasted from April 2023 until May 2025. These events show how the city has been a site of significant political change.

Omdurman is a major center for education and population growth. The city hosts several public universities, including Karary University and Omdurman Islamic University. The University of the Holy Quran and Islamic Sciences is also located there. There are private institutions such as Ahfad University for Women and Omdurman Ahlia University. The population has increased significantly over the last century. In 1909, the census recorded 42,779 people. By 1973, the population reached 299,399. By 2010, the population was estimated at 2,577,780 people.

Transportation in Omdurman is diverse and connects the city to many areas. People use yellow taxis, city buses, and various other types of buses. Three-wheeled motorcycles, known as tuk-tuks, are also common.

Travelers can also use trains and Nile ferries to move around. Because of its central location, Omdurman connects to many other Sudanese states via paved and seasonal roads. Several bridges connect Omdurman to Khartoum and Khartoum Bahri. These bridges cross the Blue and White Nile rivers.

Infrastructure projects continue to shape the city's future. In 2005, officials proposed a new airport facility south of Omdurman. This project had an estimated budget of $530 million. Construction began in 2019, but it was suspended in 2021. The construction was eventually completed in December 2025. This new facility helps support the needs of the growing population. Omdurman remains a vital part of the three capital cities that define the region.
