It serves as the capital of Kaduna State. The city is also a vital trade center for the region. It acts as a gateway to many northern Nigerian states. This importance comes from its large road and rail networks. The city sits directly on the banks of the Kaduna River.

Many people consider it a central hub for transportation and commerce.

The name "Kaduna" has two possible origins. One theory links it to the Hausa word "Kadduna." This word means "crocodiles" in the Hausa language. Another theory connects the name to the Gbagyi language. In Gbagyi, the name "Odna" means "river."

Both theories connect the city to the water nearby. This water has shaped the area for a long time.

British colonists founded the city in 1900.

Sir Frederick Lugard was the first British governor of Northern Nigeria. He chose this specific site for development. He wanted to be near the Lagos-Kano Railway. In 1917, Kaduna became the capital of the Northern Region. It held this political status until 1967. In 1976, the administration created new states. This led to the creation of Kaduna State. The state was formed from the Zaria and Katsina provinces. In 1991, the state structure changed again. Katsina became its own state. The old Zaria Province then became the new Kaduna State.

Kaduna is a massive industrial and agricultural center.

Factories in the city manufacture steel, aluminum, and machinery. They also produce petroleum products and bearings. Some light manufacturing includes plastics and leather goods. Automobile assembly is also a key part of the economy. Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria operates an assembly plant here. The city also hosts the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company. This is one of Nigeria's four main oil refineries. It receives oil through a pipeline from the Niger Delta. However, the textile industry has faced a decline. This is due to factory closures and imports from China.

Agriculture remains a pillar of the local economy.

The city is home to the headquarters of the Bank of Agriculture. Farmers in the region export many different goods. These include cotton, peanuts, sorghum, and ginger. The city also connects to global finance through the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Despite these industries, unemployment is a challenge. A 2009 World Bank survey found high unemployment levels. It estimated that 20% of the population was unemployed.

The city is a major center for education and infrastructure.

A branch line connects the Lagos-Nguru Railway to other lines. The planned Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway also passes through the area.

The climate in Kaduna is classified as tropical.
