Kaduna State is a major administrative region in northwest Nigeria. It sits on the high plains of the northern part of the country. The state is a significant part of the Nigerian landscape. It is the fourth largest state by land area. It is also the third most populous state in Nigeria. The state capital is the city of Kaduna. As of 2006, Kaduna was the eighth largest city in the country.

The geography of the state is defined by its unique environment. It is located within the Sudan Savannah vegetation zone. This means the land features scattered short trees, shrubs, and grasses. The soil is mostly sandy or loamy, though clay is also common. The Kaduna River flows through the state. This river is a tributary of the much larger Niger River. Some areas, like Zaria and Kogoro Hill, contain rocky stones. Many communities face seasonal flooding during the rainy season.

Climate patterns in Kaduna follow two distinct seasons. The rainy season is hot, humid, and cloudy. The dry season is hot and partly cloudy. Temperatures stay within a specific range most of the year. They rarely fall below 50 °F. They also rarely rise above 102 °F. Most days range between 55 °F and 95 °F. This weather supports the local economy, which relies heavily on agriculture. Farmers cultivate cotton and groundnuts for domestic use and export. They also produce peanut oil.

The history of the region is incredibly deep. Some of Africa's oldest civilizations lived here. The Nok civilization is a notable example. In the 9th century, the historian Ya'qubi documented the Hausa Kingdoms. These kingdoms existed until the early 1800s. During that time, the region was incorporated into the Sokoto Caliphate. Zazzau was a traditional state founded around 1536. It was later renamed Zaria after the sister of Queen Amina.

British colonial rule brought significant changes to the area. In 1916, Lord Frederick Lugard moved the capital of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate to Kaduna City. This move happened between 1912 and 1920. Previously, the colonial office had been in Zungeru. During this era, various local groups were categorized as "Northern Nigerians." The modern state was created through several administrative shifts. It was first called North-Central State in 1967. In 1975, military leader Gen. Murtala Mohammed created Kaduna State. The current borders were finalized in 1987 when Katsina State was carved out.

Kaduna is often called the "Centre of Learning." This nickname comes from its many important educational institutions. These include Ahmadu Bello University and the Nigerian Defence Academy. Other schools include the Air Force Institute of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic. The state is also home to many different people. There are between 59 and 63 different ethnic groups. The Hausa and Fulani are the dominant groups. Other groups include the Gbagyi, Ham, and Adara.

Life in the state includes both progress and difficult challenges. The economy is supported by agriculture and institutions like the National Institute of Leather and Technology. Communication is widespread with 21 radio stations and several television stations. However, the state has experienced periods of serious conflict. In 2002, religious riots in the capital caused about 250 deaths. Around 30,000 people lost their homes during those events. More recently, between 2021 and 2024, bandit attacks have caused violence. These attacks have included kidnappings of students at various colleges.
