The state shares borders with several other Nigerian states. To the northwest, it borders Katsina State for about 210 km. To the northeast, it meets Jigawa State along a 355 km border. The southeast border touches Bauchi State for 131 km. To the southwest, it shares a 255 km border with Kaduna State. The capital and largest city is Kano. This city is the second most populous urban center in Nigeria, following Lagos.

Kano has a deep and complex history spanning many centuries. The site was once home to the Kingdom of Kano. This kingdom was centered on Dalla Hill from 1000 to 1349 CE. In 1349, the Sultanate of Kano was established. Yaji I served as the first Sultan of this new entity. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Sultanate became the most powerful of the Hausa Kingdoms. In 1903, the British Empire conquered the Kano Emirate. This event incorporated the region into the Northern Nigeria Protectorate.

Trade has always been a central part of life in Kano. In the 15th century, the Kurmi Market was opened. This market was founded by the Hausa people under Emir Muhammadu Rumfa in 1463 CE. Later leaders helped Kano become a leading commercial center in Sudanic Africa. Emir Ibrahim Dabo implemented administrative reforms to increase regional commerce. He encouraged traders to move to the area from Katsina. The leaders of the Caliphate also promoted the kola nut trade. This trade brought an annual turnover of about $30 million to Kano. Because of this history, the state is known as the "Centre of Commerce."

The economy of Kano is highly diverse today. It is the second-largest industrial center in Nigeria. It is also the largest industrial center in northern Nigeria. The state produces textiles, footwear, cosmetics, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. It also hosts industries for ceramics, furniture, and soft drinks. Agriculture is another major pillar of the economy. In the outlying districts, people practice both subsistence and commercial farming. They grow millet, cowpeas, sorghum, maize, and rice for food. They also produce groundnuts and cotton for export and industrial use. Kano is also a major producer of sesame, soybeans, garlic, and chili peppers.

The climate in Kano shows significant recent changes. Between the 1970s and 1980s, the state experienced variable rainfall and droughts. Conditions improved between the 1990s and 2015, though rainfall still fluctuated. Since 2015, there has been a considerable increase in rainfall. The annual temperature typically ranges between 26 °C and 30 °C. However, temperatures have been rising since the 1960s. In early 2022, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency issued a flood warning. This resulted in flooding across 25 local government districts according to SEMA.

Kano is a culturally rich state with a large population. The Hausa and Fulani people make up the majority of the residents. Hausa is the dominant language, though Fulfulde is also an official language. The state is a Muslim-majority region. It is one of twelve Nigerian states that operate under Sharia law. For travel, the state uses the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.

The state also features a Western Railway Line and several major federal highways like the A2 and A9. Education is supported by five universities, including Bayero University Kano and Skyline University.
