This state has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the Kingdom of Kano was a strong place. It was centered on Dalla Hill from the years 1000 to 1349. In 1349, a new group called the Sultanate of Kano began. Yaji I was the very first Sultan of this group. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it was the most powerful of the Hausa Kingdoms. Later, the British Empire conquered the area in 1903.

Kano is often called the "Centre of Commerce." This is because it has been a place for trading for a long time. In the 15th century, the Kurmi Market was opened. This market helped the city become a major center for business. Many leaders helped this happen by encouraging traders to move there. Even today, many large markets still exist in the state. These include the Dawanau Market and the Sabon Gari Market. They sell many things like grain or cloth.

Life in Kano involves many different jobs. Many people work in farming in the outlying areas. They grow crops like millet, maize, and rice for food. They also grow cotton and groundnuts to sell. The state is also a huge center for making things in factories. They make shoes, soap, plastics, and even soft drinks. Kano is also a big place for Islamic banking. The state has many natural riches in its ground, such as copper and gemstones.

Travel and learning are important parts of the state. There is a large airport called Malam Aminu Kano International Airport. You can also travel by train or by many different roads. The state has five different universities for students. Some of these include Bayero University Kano and Skyline University. There are also many smaller colleges and schools. Most people in the state speak the Hausa language. The Hausa and Fulani people make up most of the population.
