The city has a very long and interesting history. The Yoruba people founded Ilorin in the late 18th century. It was once a military headquarters for the Oyo Empire. Later, a leader named Afonja and a teacher named Alimi formed an alliance. This alliance changed as religious power grew in the area. By 1823, Alimi's son pledged to the Sokoto Caliphate. In 1835, the Oyo Empire tried to take the city back. However, they were defeated, which marked the end of the Oyo Empire.
