It was located in parts of modern Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. This empire grew to be the largest state where people spoke Yoruba. It became a major power from the late 1500s to the early 1700s. The empire was successful because of trade and a strong government. They also used a powerful military with many soldiers on horses.

Oyo grew through many different steps over hundreds of years. First, the people built a strong political structure to rule large areas. They used a special group of soldiers called cavalry to protect their lands. These soldiers rode horses to move quickly across the terrain. The empire also used trade networks to connect with other places. They collected tributes, which are payments, from many kingdoms under their protection. This helped the empire stay wealthy and organized.

Legend tells us how the empire began with a prince named Oranmiyan. He was the last prince of the Yoruba Kingdom of Ile-Ife. According to stories, he followed a magic snake to find a new home. The snake stopped after seven days, and he founded Oyo there. Oranmiyan became the first ruler, known as the Alaafin of Oyo. The title Alaafin means "owner of the palace" in the Yoruba language.

Oyo had a very long and busy history with many leaders. Around the year 1300, the founding of Oyo is estimated to have happened. Later, the Nupe people took over the capital for about 80 years. After they left, the Yoruba rebuilt Oyo to be even more powerful. At its height, the empire covered over 150,000 square kilometers.

They even fought many wars with the Kingdom of Dahomey. In 1728, the Oyo cavalry invaded Dahomey in a major campaign.

Eventually, the empire began to face hard times and grew weaker. Many problems started in the palace around the year 1754. A leader named Gaha caused trouble by working against the kings. This led to many leaders losing their power very quickly. Some kings only ruled for a few days or weeks. Fighting between different groups also caused the empire to break apart. This instability made it hard for Oyo to stay a single, strong state.
