geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Oyo State is a large part of southwestern Nigeria. It is the biggest state in Southern Nigeria by land size. The state sits near the Republic of Benin to the west. It also shares borders with Kwara State, Osun State, and Ogun State. The capital city is Ibadan, which is a very busy place. In fact, Ibadan is the third most crowded city in Nigeria.

The land in Oyo State has a very interesting shape. In the south, the ground is mostly a flat plain. As you move north, the land rises into hills. These hills are shaped like domes and are made of old, hard rocks. Some hills, like Oloke Meji Hill, are very high. The hills in the north reach about 1,200 metres above sea level.

Many important rivers, such as the Ogun and Osun rivers, start in these high places.

History is a big part of life here. The land was once ruled by the powerful Oyo Empire. This empire ruled much of the area until 1896. Today, the state is nicknamed the "Pace Setter State." Most people living here belong to the Yoruba ethnic group. Many of these people live in crowded cities, but many others work on farms. They grow important crops like cocoa, tobacco, and cassava. The city of Shaki is often called the state's breadbasket because it grows so much food.

Oyo State is famous for being the place where many "firsts" happened in Nigeria. It is home to the University of Ibadan, which was the first university in the country. This school was started in 1948. The state also saw the first television station and the first railway line in Nigeria. Even the first skyscraper in Africa, called Cocoa House, is located in Ibadan. There are also many other schools and colleges for students to learn.

There are many wonderful places to visit in the state. You can see the Old Oyo National Park or the Agodi Botanical Garden. There is even a suspended lake called the Ado-Awaye lake. For fun, people visit the Trans-Wonderland Amusement Park. The state has many big towns that are very well known. These include Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Saki, and Iseyin. Each of these places helps make Oyo State a very special part of Nigeria.
