Oyo grew very strong through trade and a large army. The army used cavalry, which means soldiers on horses. This helped Oyo control many nearby kingdoms. At its height, the empire was very big. It covered over 150,000 square kilometers.

Oyo faced many challenges. For a time, the Nupe people took over the capital. Later, the Yoruba people rebuilt the empire to be even larger. They even fought wars with the Dahomey Kingdom. In one battle, Dahomey used guns to scare the Oyo horses. Still, Oyo won after more soldiers arrived. Eventually, the empire began to weaken. Leaders fought for power in the palace. This caused many problems that led to the end of the empire.
