These lands were between the Niger River and Lake Chad. A famous legend tells of a hero named Bayajidda. He traveled to the city of Daura. There, he killed a snake that lived in a well. The queen of Daura married him for his bravery. Their children and grandchildren went on to start many kingdoms.

Seven states are called the Hausa Bakwai. These were the "true" states. Each state had a special job. For example, Kano and Rano made cloth. Katsina and Daura were places for trade. Gobir helped defend the land from enemies.

Trade was very important for these people. They traded gold, salt, and leather. Many people moved to the area to trade or farm. Over time, many rulers became Muslim. They built mosques and schools for learning. This helped trade grow even more. By the 1800s, things began to change. New leaders from the Fulani group conquered the Hausa states. They formed a new group called the Sokoto Caliphate.
