It sits high on the Jos Plateau within the Guinea Savannah. This high location makes the weather feel quite different from the rest of the country. The air is often cooler and more temperate. In the months from mid-November to late January, night temperatures can drop quite low. Sometimes, hail even falls from the sky during the rainy season.

Because of this cool air, many people enjoy visiting the city for holidays.

Many people call the city "J-Town" or "Tin City." This is because large amounts of tin were found in the ground nearby.

People mined tin and columbite there until the 1960s. They used trains to move the metal to the coast for export. This mining work brought many different people to the area. People from the north, the southeast, and the southwest all moved there. This makes Jos a "melting pot" where many cultures and religions live together.

The history of this land goes back a very long time. Long ago, the Nok people lived in this area. They were skilled artists who lived there before the first millennium. Later, indigenous groups of farmers lived on the plateau. During British rule, the city grew very fast because of the mining. One story says the name "Jos" came from a village called Gwosh. The Hausa people may have mispronounced the name when they arrived. Another story says the name comes from the Arabic word "Jasad," which means body.

Today, the city is split into two main parts. Jos North is the center for business and big markets.
