The name comes from the Igbo words Énú Ụ́gwụ́. This means "hill top" in English. Even with this name, the city actually sits at the foot of a large slope called an escarpment. This area is part of the Cross River basin and the Benue trough. The land is filled with many hills and several large rivers.

Deep under the ground, there are huge layers of coal. These coal seams are very thick. Experts believe there are more than 300 million tons of coal in the area. In 1909, explorers found this coal near the village of Enugwu Ngwo. This discovery changed everything for the region. To move the coal, a railway called the Eastern Line was built in 1916. This path connected Enugu to the seaport at Port Harcourt.

Long ago, the area was home to the Nike people. They lived in a small village called Ogui. Other groups like the Aro and Hausa people also traveled here to trade. The Aro people were part of a large group called the Aro Confederacy. They helped control trade in the area for a long time. Later, British explorers arrived to look for minerals. In 1917, the city officially became a township. It was originally called Enugwu-Ngwo before being renamed Enugu in 1928.

As the coal mines grew, the city grew too. Many people moved there to work in the mines. By 1952, the population had reached 62,000 people. In 1948, there were about 6,000 coal miners working in the area. By 1958, that number grew to 8,000 miners. The city saw many changes during the years of British rule. It also became a very important place during the time of the Republic of Biafra.

Many rivers flow through the city, such as the Ekulu and Ogbete rivers. The Ekulu River is the largest and helps provide water to the people. Getting water can sometimes be a hard job because of the coal underground. To help, the Enugu State Water Corporation was started in 1991. This group works to bring clean water to the many residents living in the city.
