Umuahia has a very interesting history. Legend says its name comes from the Igbo words Ama Ahia or AmaAhiaOma. These words mean "market place" or "market center." Long ago, it was a central place for merchants to trade. People traveled from far away to sell pottery, crafts, and textiles. The British arrived in the region during the mid-to-late 19th century. They heard the name and spelled it as "Umuahia." Later, the town moved to Ibeku to be near more roads.
