It serves as a vital hub for commerce and transportation. The city sits along a major railroad line. This rail route connects Port Harcourt to the south. It also connects to Enugu city to the north. Because of this location, Umuahia is a famous center for agriculture and trade. Farmers and traders gather here to sell many different products. These include yams, cassava, corn, and taro. They also trade citrus fruits, palm oil, and palm kernels.

The economy of Umuahia is driven by both trade and industry. There is a brewery located in the city. There is also a plant used for processing palm oil. The city is also a significant center for scientific research and education. The National Root Crops Research Institute is located at Umudike, right next to the town. The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture is also nearby in Umudike. These institutions focus on agriculture. The city also contains several colleges. These include Trinity College, which is a theological school. Other schools include Government College Umuahia and Holy Rosary Girls Secondary School. For healthcare, the city has the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

Umuahia is organized into two local government areas (LGAs). These are Umuahia North and Umuahia South. These areas are made up of various clans and villages. In Umuahia South, there are three major clans. These are Ubakala, Olokoro, and Umuopara. Umuopara was actually part of the Ohuhu clan until 1949. The headquarters for the South is located at Apumiri in Ubakala. Umuahia North consists of the Ibeku and Ohuhu communities. The headquarters for the North is located in Ibeku. The city's population was recorded at 359,230 during the 2006 Nigerian census.

The history of Umuahia is tied to its role as a market. Popular legend says the name comes from the Igbo words AmaAhiaOma or Ama Ahia. These terms mean "market place" or "market center." In precolonial times, it was a central marketplace for the region. Merchants traveled long distances to trade here. They brought pottery, crafts, textiles, and traditional medicine. They also traded palm wine and tools. Many roads led to this busy center from nearby towns like Ohafia and Arochukwu.

British colonial administration changed the city's location and name. The British arrived in the region during the mid-to-late 19th century. They heard the name for the market and pronounced it "Umuahia." Originally, the market was at a place called Afor Ibeji near Olokoro Town. As British commercial activity increased, the town moved to Ibeku Town. This move allowed for better oversight by administrative offices. It also placed the town where many roads converged. A railroad was built by the United African Company (UAC). This rail route moved raw materials from Sub-Saharan Africa to the Atlantic Ocean for export to Europe. The new trading post was called Umuahia-Ibeku Station. Over time, the name simply became Umuahia. The original site was renamed Old Umuahia.

Umuahia also played a role in the history of the Republic of Biafra. On September 28, 1967, it was declared the second capital of that nation. This happened after Enugu, the first capital, was captured by Nigerian troops. The city saw intense conflict during this time. In April 1969, Nigerian troops attempted to occupy the city. However, a Biafran offensive led by Major E.A. Eutuk forced them to retreat. Umuahia was eventually captured on December 24, 1969. After this, Owerri became the last Biafran capital before the nation dissolved.

The climate in Umuahia is classified as tropical. According to the Köppen-Geiger system, it is categorized as Am. This means it has significant rainfall for most of the year. The average annual temperature is 26.0 °C. March is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 27.5 °C. August is the coolest month, averaging 24.5 °C.
