Today, the urban population is about 3,480,000 people. The city is one of the most crowded places in the country. It is the fifth largest city in all of Nigeria.

The city grew in stages as its work changed. At first, the port helped move coal. A railway called the Eastern Line connected the port to coal mines in Enugu.

Later, the city's main work shifted to petroleum. The first shipment of Nigerian crude oil left through the city in 1958. This change helped the city modernize. New things like overpasses and tall buildings appeared. One famous building is the Point Block. It has 18 stories and is the tallest in its region.

History shows how the city was named and built. A man named Frederick Lugard founded the port in 1912. In 1913, he named it after Lewis Harcourt. Harcourt was a leader for the colonies at that time. The city grew by adding many nearby villages. These included places like Diobu, Oroworukwo, and Rumuomasi. The native Ikwerre people have lived in the area for a long time. They call the city Rebisi or Ozugboko.
