The state is near the Atlantic Ocean. It borders several other states. To the north, it touches Imo and Anambra. Abia and Akwa Ibom are to the east. Bayelsa and Delta are to the west. The state is named after the many rivers that flow through it. One famous river is the Bonny River. Other rivers include the Nun and Orashi rivers.

The land here has many different zones. Most of the state is dry upland land. This covers 61% of the area. The rest is riverine land that makes up 39%. Near the coast, you will find mangrove swamps. Further inland, there are thick tropical rainforests. The ground is often low and flat. Some areas are less than 20 meters above sea level. This means the land can flood when rivers rise.
