It is the largest city in the Matabeleland region. It is also the second largest city in the whole country. The Matsheumhlope River flows near the city. The city sits at a high elevation of 1,200 meters. This height helped make the area free from malaria in the past.

This city has a very long and busy history. Around 1840, a leader named Gundwane Ndiweni helped found a place called Gibixhegu. This was the home of the Ndebele king, Mzilikazi. Later, his son Lobengula became the king. He changed the name to koBulawayo. The name comes from the Ndebele word for "the one to be killed."

During the 1890s, British soldiers arrived and took control of the area. The town was rebuilt and became a municipality in 1897. It finally gained city status in 1943.

Bulawayo is known as a very important place for industry. People often call it the "City of Kings." They also use the Ndebele phrase "kontuthu ziyathunqa," which means "smoke arising."
