They are the largest ethnic group in South Africa today. Most Zulu people live in a province called KwaZulu-Natal. Long ago, they were part of the Nguni communities. These groups moved along the east coast during the Bantu migrations. The name "iZulu" in the Nguni language means heaven or weather.

A leader named Shaka helped join many small clans together. He did this about 250 years after the Zulu clan began. Shaka built a powerful military system called the Impi. This system used a special way to organize young men. They were put into groups called amabutho. These groups lived in large buildings known as amakhanda.

These barracks were built much larger than a normal home.

In 1816, Shaka formed a powerful state. He was a commander for the Mthethwa Empire. Shaka used new weapons and smart battle plans to grow. This caused many people to move across southern Africa. One group led by Mzilikazi moved north to what is now Zimbabwe. Another leader named Zwangendaba led people to the Zambezi River.
