In the city of Pretoria, people use a city version called Sepitori. Many different ethnic groups use the language. These groups include the Bakwena, the Barolong, and the Bakgatla. Even though groups have different styles, the written language stays the same.

Learning the sounds of Setswana is very interesting.

The language uses the Latin alphabet for writing. It has many different vowel and consonant sounds. Some speakers use special click sounds. These clicks are used in interjections or to show feelings. For example, a click can express annoyance. These clicks are mostly used by older people today. The language also uses two tones, which are high and low. Changing the pitch of your voice can change the meaning of a word. One tone might mean "to speak," while another might mean "to skin an animal."

History shows how much work went into studying Setswana.

A German traveler named Hinrich Lichtenstein first described it in 1806. He lived with the Batlhaping tribe. He thought it was a dialect of isiXhosa, but he was mistaken. Later, a missionary named Robert Moffat did major work on the language. He published a spelling book in 1826. By 1857, he finished a complete translation of the Bible. Other missionaries like James Archbell and E. Casalis also wrote about it. They helped people understand if it was a separate language.

About four million people speak the language in the North West. There are also about 10,000 speakers in Namibia. A small number of people speak it in Zimbabwe too. These numbers show how large and important the language is.

Nouns are grouped into nine different classes. There is also one smaller subclass. Each class uses different prefixes to group words together. For example, Class 1 is used for persons. Class 1a is used for names and kinship. Class 3 and Class 4 are used for things like tools or plants. This system helps organize how people talk about the world. It is a very structured way to build a language.
