It is one of twelve official languages in South Africa. People speak it mostly in the Mpumalanga Province. They also speak it in Gauteng, Limpopo, and the Northwest. Some people call the language isikhethu. This term means the Southern Ndebele way of doing or saying things. It is a special way to describe their unique culture.

Learning the language involves many interesting sounds. It uses different types of vowels. There are close, mid, and open vowels. The language also uses consonants like p, t, and k. Some sounds are made by clicking the tongue. These are called click consonants. There are dental clicks and lateral clicks.

The language also uses nasal sounds like m and n. These sounds help people communicate clearly with each other. Every sound has a specific place in the mouth.

The history of the Ndebele people follows a long line of kings. It starts with King Ndebele. He fathered King Mkhalangana. Then came King Mntungwa, who started the amaNtungwa clan. The line continued through King Jonono and King Nanasi. King Mafana and King Mhlanga were also part of this history.

King Musi was a later leader. His kraal was at eMhlangeni. This place is known as Randfontein today. This long history shows how the people and their language grew.

Speaking isiNdebele has not always been easy. In the past, people were discouraged from speaking it in public. This happened during the time of the apartheid Southern Ndebele homeland. Many people began to speak Zulu instead. This was because Zulu was taught in schools.

However, things are different now. Many educated people choose to use isiNdebele as a home language. They want to pass it on to their children. This helps keep the language alive for the future.

Grammar in isiNdebele works in a very organized way. Nouns are made of a prefix and a stem. These prefixes help group words into different classes. This makes it easier to compare with other Bantu languages. Verbs also use special parts called affixes. These parts show who is doing the action.

You can see how words change for different months. For example, January is uZibandlela in Southern Ndebele. This is different from Zulu, where January is uMasingane. These patterns make the language very special.
