Learning how to speak Sesotho is quite a unique experience. The language uses a special way of building words. This is called being agglutinative. This means people add small parts to a main root word to make a whole new word. It also uses a system of noun genders. These genders do not tell you if something is male or female. Instead, they help organize how words work together.

History tells us many stories about the Sotho people. Oral histories are kept in special songs called liboko. Long ago, different tribes like the Bapedi and Batlokwa were part of the Sotho-Tswana group. In the early 19th century, King Moshoeshoe I helped form the modern Basotho nation. He chose the Sekwena dialect to be used by his people. This history shows how many different groups came together to form one nation.
