Polokwane has a very long and complex history. It was once called Pietersburg. In the 1840s, a group called the Voortrekkers tried to start a town nearby. Later, in 1886, the town of Pietersburg was officially founded. During the Second Boer War in 1900, it served as a capital for a short time. In 1901, the British occupied the town. They built a concentration camp there for Boer women and children.

Later, the city lived through the years of apartheid. These were laws that kept people of different races apart in different areas. This changed after the 1994 elections. In 2005, the city officially took the name Polokwane.

Many different people live in and visit the city today. In 2011, the population was about 130,000 people. About 45.9% of the people speak Sepedi, which is also called Northern Sotho. The name Polokwane actually means "Sanctuary" in that language. The city is divided into seven clusters and forty-five wards. It is a place with many different cultures and traditions. For example, the Zion Christian Church has its headquarters nearby at Zion City Moria. This church holds very large gatherings twice a year.
