It serves as the largest urban center located north of Gauteng. The name Polokwane comes from the Northern Sotho language. In that language, the word means "Sanctuary." The city is a vital regional hub. It sits roughly halfway between Gauteng and the Zimbabwean border.

This location makes it a key stop on the N1 toll highway. This major road connects Zimbabwe to large South African cities like Pretoria and Johannesburg. The city also connects to other areas via several provincial routes. For example, the R71 road leads toward the Kruger National Park.

The climate in Polokwane is classified as semiarid. This means the region is generally dry. Although the city is near the Tropic of Capricorn, it is not extremely hot. This is because Polokwane sits on a high plateau. The elevation is approximately 1,230 meters above sea level. The city experiences a summer rainy season. December and January are typically the wettest months. July is usually the driest month of the year. In October, the city becomes very colorful. Many streets are lined with Jacaranda trees. These trees bloom with bright purple blossoms.

Polokwane has a complex and sometimes difficult history. In the 1840s, Voortrekkers led by Andries Hendrik Potgieter tried to establish Zoutpansbergdorp. They had to abandon that settlement due to clashes with local Lebelo, Langa, and Ledwaba clans. Later, in 1886, a new town was founded. It was named Pietersburg after the leader Petrus Jacobus Joubert. During the Second Boer War in 1900, the town briefly served as a capital. In 1901, British forces occupied the town. They established a concentration camp there.

This camp held nearly 4,000 Boer women and children.

Following the Boer War, the city entered an era of apartheid. This was a system of institutionalized racial segregation. Laws like the Group Areas Act of 1950 strictly controlled where people could live. Urban planning was divided by race. For instance, the Bendor suburb was reserved for White residents. The townships of Seshego and Mankweng were designated for the Black population. Other areas like Nirvana and Westenburg were for Indian, Asian, or Coloured groups. These laws enforced a regular barrier between different races. This era of segregation ended following the 1994 South African general elections. On 27 April 1994, Polokwane became the capital of the Northern Transvaal province. This province was later renamed Limpopo.

Today, Polokwane is a diverse and growing city. According to 2011 data, the population was about 130,000 people. The demographics show a large African population of 74.4 percent. About 18.2 percent of the residents are White. Many of these residents are Afrikaners. There is also a group of about 10,000 English-speaking whites. This group includes people of British descent and White Zimbabweans. Roughly 45.9 percent of the population speaks Sepedi. The city is organized into seven clusters and forty-five wards. These clusters include areas like Mankweng and Seshego.

The city offers many modern services and cultural sites. It has large shopping malls and various restaurants.

For history lovers, the Bakone Malapa Northern Sotho Open-Air Museum is a key site. It shows traditional and modern lifestyles. It also contains archaeological sites with rock paintings from around 1000 B.C. The city is also a religious center. The Zion Christian Church is headquartered at Zion City Moria, about 25 kilometers east of the city. This church has about 16 million members.

Transportation in Polokwane is well-developed. The city is served by two airports. The Polokwane International Airport is to the north. The smaller Pietersburg Civil Aerodrome is to the southeast.

Many roads connect the city to other major centers. The R71 route is especially popular with bikers. It hosts the largest bike meeting in Africa. The city also uses rail to transport goods. This includes agricultural products like citrus fruit, sugar cane, and avocados. Polokwane continues to develop its infrastructure and modern housing.
