Mahikeng is a busy capital city in South Africa. It sits in the North West province near the border of Botswana. The city is built on open land called a veld. It sits at an elevation of 1,300 meters. The Upper Molopo River flows by the banks of the town. You might find gold nearby in the Madibi goldfields. The weather here is warm and semi-arid. This means the summers are hot and the winters are mild and dry. The sun shines a lot throughout the year.

The name Mahikeng means "place of rocks" in the Setswana language. This name comes from volcanic rocks found in the area. Long ago, Stone Age humans used these rocks for shelter. They stayed near the river to hunt animals. The town has had many different names over time. British settlers once called it Mafeking. In 2010, the name was officially changed to Mahikeng. However, many local people still call it Mafikeng today.

History shows that a man named Molema founded a town here. He lived in the 1800s and was a leader of the Barolong people. Molema was a businessman and a farmer. He also believed in education and opened a school. In 1899, the town went through a very difficult time. During the Second Boer War, the town was under siege for 217 days. This lasted from October 1899 until May 1900. Many people lost their lives during this period.

Mahikeng has served as a capital for several different areas. For many years, it was the capital of the Bechuanaland Protectorate. This lasted until 1965 when Gaborone became the new capital. Later, it served as the capital for Bophuthatswana. After apartheid ended in 1994, it became the capital of the North West province. The city has grown a lot over the years. In 2001, about 49,300 people lived there. By 2007, the population was reported to be 250,000.

Today, Mahikeng is a place with many important facilities. It is home to North-West University. You can also find the Mmabatho Stadium and the Mafikeng Airport. If you like nature, there are two large game reserves nearby. The Mafikeng Game Reserve is 4,800 hectares. The Botsalano Game Reserve is even larger at 5,800 hectares. Many famous people come from this area. These include singers, actors, and even a Chief Justice of South Africa.
