Mahikeng is a city in South Africa. Its name means "place of rocks." It sits in the North West province. The city is near the border of Botswana. It sits on open land by the Upper Molopo River.

Long ago, Stone Age humans used volcanic rocks for shelter. They stayed near the river to hunt animals. A man named Molema founded a town here in the 1800s. He was a leader and a businessman. He also opened a school for his people.

History has changed the city many times. It was once called Mafeking. During the Boer War, the town was under siege for 217 days. This was a hard time for many people. Later, the city served as a capital for other areas. Now, it is the capital of the North West province.

The weather is warm and dry. The summers are hot. The winters are mild with cool nights. The sun shines a lot during the year. Near the town, you can find gold fields. There are also large areas for wild animals. These are called game reserves. You can visit the Mafikeng Game Reserve or the Botsalano Game Reserve.
