The city is located in the Mdzimba Mountains. It sits near the Mbabane River. A smaller river called the Polinjane River flows there too.

The city has a mild climate because it is high up. The average height is 1,243 meters. This high altitude creates a subtropical highland climate. Most rain falls during the summer months. The wettest month is January. The driest month is June. Snow is a very rare event here. It has only snowed three times since 1900. The city also sees very little frost. It averages only four days of frost each year.

Mbabane has a long and interesting history. Mickey Wells founded the town in 1887. He built it where a trade route crossed the river. The town is named after a chief named Mbabane Kunene. In 1902, Great Britain named it the capital. At that time, the town only had a few shops. It also had some churches and schools. Later, the government moved the main center from Bremersdorp. This change happened in January 1902.

Many things help the city grow today. After World War II, new trade schools opened. A railway called the Goba connected the area to other places. The sugar industry also brought new investment. Now, the city is a hub for many businesses. It is a center for the financial service sector. This includes banking, insurance, and investment management.

The city also helps with tourism. It has many hotels and golf courses for visitors.

Life in Mbabane is busy and diverse. People speak siSwati and English. You can find many different places of worship. These include Christian churches and Muslim mosques. The city is a great place for learning. It is home to the University of Eswatini. It also has the Waterford-Kamhlaba United World College. You can even see local art at the Indingilizi Gallery. This gallery shows paintings, pottery, and jewelry.
